The 2022 tax filing season is just around the corner, and there are several important dates to keep in mind. In this blog post, we’ll outline the key dates you need to know about for the upcoming filing season.
Jan. 13 marks the official opening of IRS Free File. This program allows taxpayers who made $72,000 or less in 2020 to file their taxes for free by using brand-name tax software tools. You don’t have to worry about enrolling—simply go online and select a provider from Free File’s list of participating companies for your free fillable forms.
Jan 17 is the due date for tax year 2022 fourth quarter estimated payments. If you are self-employed or an independent contractor, you may be required to make estimated quarterly payments throughout the year rather than paying one lump sum when you file your return. If that applies to you, remember that the fourth quarter payment is due on January 17th!
On Jan 23rd, The IRS will begin accepting and processing individual 2022 tax returns and kick off the 2023 tax season as well. It’s also Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day on Jan 27th, which is a great time remind yourself (and others!) of all of the valuable tax credits available to many people – including options like using prior-year income to qualify. Finally, April 18th is National due date to file a 2022 tax return or request an extension and pay any taxes owed due to Emancipation Day holiday in Washington D.C., with October 16th being the due date for those requesting an extension on their 2022 return.
